Attendance

Attendance is a priority at Giles Junior School and due to a safeguarding incident in London last year (where a child starved to death two weeks after his mother collapsed and died) new safeguarding procedures have been put in place to prevent this happening again.  The child’s death could have been avoided if the school had visited the house and alerted police.

If your child is absent from school, please contact the office by 9:30am to inform us.  If we have not heard by 9:30am we will send a text message informing you of your child’s absence and ask you to call the school office.  If we have not heard from anyone by 10:30am, we will contact the emergency contacts for your child.

If your child is then absent the following day and the school has not received a reason, then Safeguarding officers from Giles Junior School will make a visit to your house to check that your child is ok.

If you are aware in advance that your child will be absent, i.e. holidays, appointments, please complete an application for leave form which is available from the school office and supply evidence of medical appointments.

Any holidays that are taken during term-time will not be authorised and a fine will be incurred if your child has 15 unauthorised sessions or more in 2 consecutive terms. Please be aware that a school day consists of 2 sessions (am/pm).

Procedures for start/end of day.

The school is open from 8:40am with supervision for all children on the  playground. At 8:45am children are allowed to go straight into class for an 8:55am start. Registers close at 9:00, after which time children will be marked late.  Afternoon registration begins at 12:30 for year 3 and 4, registers close at 12:40 and year 5 and 6 1:30, with registers closing at 1:40.  You can ring the office before school to pass on important information. We kindly ask that parents do not enter the classrooms as this helps children to develop their independence. Staff will ensure that children are collected by an appropriate adult at the end of the day. Please collect your child from their classrooms at 3.15pm.

What happens if my child is late?

If you are late, please go straight to the school office to register your child and give your reason for lateness. This will allow them to choose a lunch at the same time. Persistent lateness means time in at lunch times to catch up with lost learning.
