Supporting your child at home

The most important factor to helping children succeed is in supporting the school with the work we set.  Homework is focused on the key skills which thread through all areas of the curriculum.  Should you have any queries regarding homework, please see your child’s class teacher.

Reading is an extremely important task for children  and they often enjoy the opportunity to read to an adult.  We ask that you try to read with your child once a evening.  It doesn’t need to be a reading book, it could be part of a magazine, recipe book, leaflet etc.

Reading

We expect your child to engage in reading every night - they have reading records to be signed daily.

Spelling and Multiplication Facts

A key focus on basic numerical fluency, including multiplication tables and core number facts, can be further supported at home through recommended websites and platforms, which are shared with parents at the start of the year.

Rehearsal of phonics and spellings is also encouraged at home. Information about the sounds, spelling patterns, prefixes or suffixes being taught is shared with parents to support additional practice beyond the classroom.

We are always happy to work in partnership with parents who would like further guidance on how to support their child at home. Our approach remains flexible and supportive, avoiding punitive measures for non-completion and instead recognising and celebrating engagement with home learning.

Additional projects may also be set throughout the year, often linked to specific areas of the curriculum such as science, art or wider foundation subjects. These provide opportunities for pupils to explore learning creatively at home, often alongside family members, and to share their ideas back in school as part of further discussion and learning.

Please see below for some maths games which you might play with your child to reinforce key place value concepts which are fundamental foundations for understanding maths.
